Assimilation
One part of the sign (e.g., handshape, location, etc.) is influenced by the upcoming or last segment of neighboring sign.
Video Examples of Assimilation
The woman on the right is fingerspelling “RPCV” (which is an acronym for “returned Peace Corps volunteer”).
The middle and index fingers are still flexed at the middle joints for the V at the end of the fingerspelled word. This is because of the prior letter C which is typically flexed at the middle joints.
The man here says something like, “I remember a long time ago when I was young.”
Both first personal pronouns (“I”) occur to the right just under the shoulder. This is not of citation form (hand points to the center of the chest with all fingers flexed except for the index finger which is fully extended). It’s hard to see in this video but the fingers are also not of citation form.
