Proximalization

Proximalization refers to the transfer of movement to a more proximal joint (closer to the torso, away from the fingers).

Video Examples of Proximalization

Proximalization is especially common in young signers who are still gaining control of their motor development.

In this video, the young boy (about 18 months old) is signing HORSE. He signs it three times. Instead of flexing his knuckle joints for the index and middle fingers for the sign HORSE, he moves his body instead!
